Jog Falls is the second highest plunge waterfall in India and is a must visit tourist attraction in Karnataka. It is created by the River Sharavathi falling from a height of 253 meters (829 ft). It is locally called by different names like Gersoppa Falls, Joga Jalapata, Jogada Gundi etc. Jog is just 19 kms from GundiMane Homestay.
River Sharavathi gets split into four different streams viz. Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. They have been named so depending upon their apparent trajectories. Owing to its natural beauty, a lot of movies from different languages have been shot here. Jog Falls was a perennial waterfalls before the HireBhasakara and Linganamakki Dam were built by Sir M Vishweshwaraiah across the River Sharavathi to generate electricity. While ordinary people just marvelled at the beauty of Jogfalls, Sir MV exclaimed, “What a waste!” and went on to build the dam to harness this energy.
If you prefer a nice homestay near Jogfalls, GundiMane fits the bill as it is only 19 kms away from Jog falls. It is hardly a 25 minutes scenic drive from GundiMane.
